Magazine Glossary

Here are a few examples of terminology that is associated with magazine design. I have created a glossary to show their definitions.

GLOSSARY

Bar Code - A series of vertical bars of varying widths that can be read by a laser scanner.

Puff - A shape with information in it. Created to grab people's attention.

Front - The style and print of the text.

Typography - The appearance of printed text. How it has been chosen to look.

Style - Visual factors that make up the theme of the magazine.

Target Audience - Who the magazine is aimed at. eg 17-25 year olds.

Formal/Informal - Depending who the target audience is, the magazine will be written and presented in more casual or official way to cater for their expectations.

Language - Words chosen to make up the text in the magazine.

Puns - A play on words.

Sans Serif - Text without additional add ons eg. F

Serif - Text with additional add ons eg. F

Headline Font - Fonts that are mainly used for the title of pages.

Body Font - Fonts that are easy to read and are used for the majority of the magazine text.

Drop Cap - When the first letter is enlarged.

Cover Line - Text on the front cover.

Tag Line - Writing under the headline

Rhetorical Question - A question that doesnt need answering.
